Young Musicians Shine at Mid-Winter Concert
The night before a massive snow storm struck the area, a mid-winter concert at Huntington High School drew a crowd of about 300 to the building’s auditorium.
“The concert bands played a wide variety of very interesting and challenging music, demonstrating the advanced expressive and technical skills of our young musicians,” said Joan R. Fretz, district director of fine and performing arts.
The evening included a cartoon-themed piece played by the junior band, with a synchronized video prepared by video teacher Heather Swan displayed on a huge screen.
Ms. Fretz said the senior band did a “terrific job” performing “Africa.” It was a demanding selection and an exciting one from the audience’s perspective.
Each of the bands played pieces that had unusual vocal parts and highly contrapuntal melodies and rhythms. “It was definitely an evening of interesting, contemporary band music,” Ms. Fretz said. “The audience was inspired and learned a lot, too.”
Teacher Brian Stellato directed the junior symphonic band while colleague Jason Giachetti directed the senior symphonic band.
