Trustees Approve New
Scholarship Fund

Huntington School Board members approved the creation of a new scholarship fund in memory of Kathryn A. DeGelleke, a special education teacher who passed away in September 2009 after a two-year battle with cancer.

“The October Dawn Special Education Scholarship in memory of Kathryn A. DeGelleke” will be privately funded, as are all such district scholarships. The goal of the scholarship “is to provide financial support to motivated special education students in achieving a higher level of education.”

Mrs. Gelleke worked in the district as a home tutor and provided instructional support services. The amount of the annual scholarship award will be determined by her husband, Scott.

To be eligible for the scholarship students must be in the Huntington High School special education program and have a minimum grade average of 70. Recipients must be headed either to college or vocational school.

The scholarship will be awarded to one or more students each year. Applicants will be asked to submit a one-page essay detailing what obstacles they have overcome in high school, their future plans and why they believe they should be awarded the scholarship.
