Weller Closes Regular Season with 100th Victory

Huntington junior Olivia Weller is one tough cookie. She’s the defending Suffolk epee champion and in the last meet of the regular season against Commack, she clinched the Blue Devils’ one-point victory and won the 100th match of her storied career.
Weller is 29-4 this season and owns a career mark of 100-41 in five seasons of varsity competition. She’s the fourth fencer in head coach Alan Kuver’s 20-year career to reach 100 victories.
The meet with Commack posed a real challenge for Huntington. With nine bouts remaining, the teams were locked in a 9-9 tie. The Blue Devils dropped four of the next six bouts, losing three of them after being tied 4-4.
Trailing 13-11 with three epee matches left to go, Huntington sent senior Alanna Tieman into battle. In a seesaw bout that at one point was tied at 4-4, Tieman worked her magic and won 5-4, running her season record to 20-5. She is 9-1 in bouts that were tied at 4-4.
Next up was senior Johanna Clifford, who won her match 5-1 to finish her season at 25-9. Then Weller clinched the meet by also winning by a 5-1 score. Sophomore Alexandra Martinolich was 2-1 in foil and the family duo of Joey and Dylan Tuozzo each went 2-1 in saber to help the Huntington effort.
Entering the season finale, Commack had only lost to perennial Long Island power Ward Melville and was in second place in the county standings. Huntington, after starting the season 1-4, finished at 9-5, winning eight of its final nine meets to lock up third place in the Suffolk standings.
