Waldron Becomes Indispensable
After spending more than two years at St. Anthony’s High School, junior Jackie Waldron returned to the Blue Devil athletic fold and Huntington girls’ basketball coach Brad Reminick is more than happy with the results.
As the Blue Devils start their final drive for a play-off berth, Waldron has played an increasingly important role. “Jackie has been carrying us on her back lately,” Reminick said. “I couldn’t be happier with her performance.”
Waldron played on the basketball team at J. Taylor Finley Middle School as a seventh grader and then jumped up to the JV as an eighth grader. But, then she departed for St. Anthony’s where she played forward. Upon her return to Huntington last fall, Reminick installed her at guard and she “hasn’t complained,” he said.
“She stepped up and filled a huge hole for us because we were having trouble scoring from the guard position,” Reminick said. “She is the type of kid that will do anything to help out her teammates. She is one of the hardest working kids day in and out and her transition coming back from St. A's has gone very smoothly from a basketball standpoint.
Waldron has enjoyed a series of productive games offensively and is known for her hustle and good defense. “Not only is she playing well offensively, she has been grabbing 10 or more rebounds a game her last three games,” Reminick said last week.
After losing its entire starting line-up to graduation last June, Huntington was glad Waldron returned to the fold. “She single handedly kept us in the Comsewogue game offensively by hitting four 3's and doing a number on the boards,” the coach said. “It was our best win this season and puts us back in the hunt for a play-off spot which many people did not give us a chance to do. I am very proud of her efforts.”
