Chisolm’s Always Ready for a Challenge
Ask Huntington High School teachers and they will tell you, senior Alexander Chisolm is an asset to their classrooms. Over the years the teenager has garnered a reputation as an intelligent and articulate wise young man.
Mr. Chisolm is an exceedingly well-rounded student. He’s raised money for Habitat for Humanity, assisted at the Townwide Fund’s charity race, organized a charity bandfest to raise scholarship funds and participated in the high school Key club. He’s been a member of the fencing and crew teams, won awards in the congressional art competition, Nassau Community College Art Celebration and the Science Olympiad’s “Sumobot” robotics challenge.
Teacher Roy W. Dumar was impressed by Mr. Chisolm during an AP English language and composition course last year. “Alexander made significant contributions during our seminar-style discussions,” Mr. Dumar said. “At first, I mistook his reserved nature as an indication that he was intimidated by the discussion format. I quickly learned that Alexander delays entering into discourse in order to formulate carefully considered and articulate comments. His observations and comments ultimately enhanced the discourse and revealed a great deal of wisdom.”
Through his meaningful and insightful contributions to the class, Mr. Chisolm “earned his peers’ respect,” Mr. Dumar said. The senior participated in a LeadAmerica journalism course at Columbia University following his sophomore year and took part in Carnegie Mellon’s pre-college program last summer.
Huntington college counselor Bernadette Walsh said Mr. Chisolm is “conscientious and sensitive to those around him.” He’s a visible presence around the high school and has had a hand in a variety of clubs, teams and programs over the past four years.
Mrs. Walsh said the senior “craves a challenge. He’s a leader with a warm and caring nature and unwavering motivation and determination.
“Alex is the quintessential student,” Mrs. Walsh said. “He is a competitive learner, consistently demonstrating a strong level of academic and personal commitment by enrolling in classes that have tested his confidence and heightened his senses.” Mr. Chisolm was named an AP Scholar last fall.
“Alexander thrived on the exploration of the social issues at the heart of many of the course readings,” Mr. Dumar said. “He wrote insightful essays that demonstrated his mature thoughts on major social issues and the human condition. His writing made evident his intelligent mind, impressive lexicon and skillful command of language.”
Always ready for a challenge, Mr. Chisolm has participated in the Long Island Science Congress, Lexus Eco Challenge, Canon Envirothon and Team America Rocketry Challenge.
A founding member of Huntington’s Science Honor Society and science research club, Mr. Chisolm has also been a contributor and illustrator for The Dispatch, the high school student newspaper.
