Huntington School Briefs

Huntington School Board members have accepted a donation from Gold Coast Physical Therapy, Inc., which had offered to custom paint a golf cart used by the athletic department. “They will work with a local auto body shop to paint the golf cart with the school colors and the Blue Devil logo,” said Georgia D. McCarthy, district director of physical education, health and interscholastic athletics.

Habitat for Humanity Heading South

Huntington High School’s Habitat for Humanity chapter is heading to New Orleans to assist in the continued rebuilding efforts there. A group of 18 students and three adults will journey south on Sunday, March 28 and return on Saturday, April 3. The trip coincides with spring break so students will not miss any classes.

Faculty advisor Robert Gilmor will lead the group, which will also include science teacher Craig McKee and parent Kimberly DeFranco.

The group will rise each day at 6:30 a.m. and then eat breakfast together at 7 a.m. The work day will run from 7:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dinner is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Group activities will be held from 7-10 p.m. each night.

Jack Abrams Club Advisors

Huntington School Board members appointed Patricia Dillon (newspaper), Paul Esposito (School of Rock, student government), Michael Macolino (School of Rock) and Scott Armyn (student government) as club advisors at Jack Abrams Intermediate School.

Kavanagh Returns

Huntington School Board members approved a consultant services contract with retired district teacher Joann Kavanagh. She will present professional development workshops through the Teacher Center on video conferencing, integrating research and technology into classroom activities, multi-media resources to use with a SMART Board, developing webquests and integrating PowerPoint technology into daily lessons.

Mrs. Kavanagh, who was the district’s instructional technology coordinator and Teacher Center director before retiring last year, will be paid $100 per hour for 10 hours of workshops.

New Home for Crew

The Huntington crew team is getting a new home now that the Huntington School Board has approved an agreement with the Town of Huntington for the Blue Devils to store boats at a facility located at Fleets Cove Beach. The team had previously used the boathouse at Coindre Hall, but that has been closed for reconstruction.

The town has granted the crew team permission to use Fleets Cove from March 1 through November 30, 2010 and from March 1, 2011 through November 30, 2011.

Next School Board Meeting

The next regularly scheduled meeting of the Huntington School Board will be held on Monday, February 8 at 7:30 p.m. in the Jack Abrams Intermediate School auditorium. The public is welcome to attend.

Substitutes Approved

Huntington School Board members approved the addition of numerous individuals to the district’s substitute employee list including teachers Tina Balducci, Shannon Calderon, Daniell DeVaul, Eric Filardi, Jennifer Mignano-Brady, Jayne Moore, Ryan Conroy and Angela Meringolo. Gabriel and Vanessa Gurrieri were added the clerical sub list. Michael Gedacht was approved to work as a buildings and grounds and food service sub. Angela Palmieri was also authorized to work as a substitute custodian.

Huntington Foundation Praised

The Huntington Foundation presented Superintendent John J. Finello with the organization’s Spirit Award at its annual gala at The Woodlands in January. In turn, Mr. Finello praised the volunteer group.

“In our current economic climate, I understand, perhaps better than most, how challenging it is to prepare students to meet state and federal imposed standards and rigorous testing requirements,” the longtime administrator said. “Our resources are severely strained in this effort. New York State is facing a large and growing budget deficit. Property taxes are high and continue to climb. Many people are finding it harder and harder to survive. As a result, we are extremely grateful for the critically important work of the Foundation.”

The recent dinner and auction raised $24,000 for the Foundation, which supports two grant programs. “Through your efforts you have assisted us in our mission,” Mr. Finello said. “I cannot emphasize enough how important your contributions are to the district and I sincerely hope you know how much we appreciate all the work you do.”
