McCourt Steps Up

Meredith McCourt is the type of player a coach quickly learns to appreciate. The Huntington High School senior is rarely in the limelight but always fills her role to perfection. This year’s she has stepped up her presence and is one of the reasons the Blue Devil girls’ basketball team is challenging for a post-season berth.

McCourt, who has also lettered in varsity soccer, is affectionately called “Diff” by her basketball teammates. She’s been with head coach Brad Reminick since her freshman year and is the most experienced returning member of Huntington’s great teams.

“Meredith brings a sense of excitement to the gym every day and as a coach that’s something you just love,” Reminick said. “She plays extremely hard and leads by example. She cares so much!”

McCourt can be tough as nails on the court and her expressions can be intimidating. She’s a “take no prisoners” type of player. But, Reminick has found a different side to her, too. “Not only does she excel on the court athletically, she truly is the team’s biggest goof ball,” he said.

When Huntington traveled to Virginia last winter, Reminick said the eight hour bus trip helped him learn a lot about his players, including McCourt. “I think she had us laughing the minute we left the high school parking lot,” he said. “She makes it easy to come to the gym each day because she lightens up the room and everyone follows her lead.”

As the Blue Devils started to find their groove on the court this season, McCourt was smack in the middle of the action. She’s scored in the double digits several times, including a career high 22 against Half Hollow Hills East. But, she’s just as content to contribute an assist, grab a rebound or steal the ball away from an opponent. She rarely makes a mistake or turns the ball over.

McCourt’s a fine student, too. “To know that she is leaving next year will leave a big whole in this program,” Reminick said. “She’s our leader!”
