Blue Devil Girls' VB Goes Winless
Isabelle Senat earned All-League honors but the Huntington High School girls' volleyball team finished the season with a 0-13 record under head coach Caroline Reilly.
The 11-player squad was captained by Natalie Acton and Haley Brown. Reilly said the Blue Devils were "a young team that needed to learn to believe in themselves. When they played to their ability, they were as good as the best teams in the league."
Senat, Acton, Lidia Aparicio, Laurelle Byrne-Cody and Mia Cadle Hinton were the team's top players. "In a season with no wins, the Harborfields game proved to be a turning point," Reilly said. "All six girls were ready and we almost won. That proved to them that they had skill."
Acton, a junior setter, recorded 178 total sets. "Natalie's expertise and all-around play kept everyone's head in the game," Reilly said. Aparicio, also a junior, who plays a variety of positions on the floor, compiled a serving percentage of 92.
Cadle-Hinton, a sophomore, had a team high 29 blocks. Byrne-Cody, a junior, recorded 164 passes to the intended target. Byrne-Cody, who led the team in touches and sophomore Raynisha Witherspoon provided back row hustle and saves and helped keep the team charged up.
Senat, a talented senior, "was known as the 'spark.'" Reilly said. "When she was on, the whole team was up."
Looking ahead to next fall, every player will return except for Senat, who is graduating next June. "We may surprise everyone next year and make a run for the play-offs," Reilly said. The returnees plan to play during the spring and summer months and that should contribute to a more competitive squad in 2011.
