Tough Season for Blue Devil
Boys' Volleyball
Despite a 1-13 record, they kept their heads held high. Huntington High School boys' volleyball players never quit, that's for sure. The Blue Devils were led by John McCarthy, David Stillman, Ryan Casale and Michael Sullivan.
Coached by Chris Mooney, the 14-player squad had its moments. The highlight of the season came when Huntington topped Westhampton Beach in a thrilling deciding fifth game, 25-23 on senior day. "They really worked hard, diving for balls and coming back in the last game from a 22-19 deficit," Mooney said.
Despite the final record, the Blue Devils have every reason to feel good about the future. "This is a very young team that is set to peak next year," Mooney said. "If players stay dedicated to improving throughout the year, they will be very competitive next year."
Huntington will lose only one senior to graduation. Mooney will look for more consistency from the team's setters. "Division III is a competitive division," the coach said. "We should compete for the final playoff spot if everyone improves and we find a second outside hitter."
McCarthy, a junior outside hitter, led the team in kills and aces. "John is a special player," Mooney said. "I consider him a Top 5 player in the county. I am looking forward to his improvement by next year to help lead us to a playoff berth."
Stillman, a senior outside hitter, was tops on the squad in passing percentage and second in kills and aces. "David as a great leader for this team," Mooney said. "He worked very hard and became an outstanding outside hitter. His intelligence and drive will help him become very successful."
Sullivan, a talented junior middle blocker, led the Blue Devils in blocks. "Mike is the best blocker on the team," Mooney said matter-of-factly. "Our success really is determined by how well he plays. He has grown as a player throughout the year."
McCarthy earned All-League honors. Casale, Sullivan and Stillman were all recognized as All-League honorable mention selections. Stillman was also presented with an All-Academic Award. The Blue Devils picked up their honors at the annual Suffolk Volleyball Coaches Award Dinner at the East Wind Caterers in Shoreham Wading River.
