Dual Language Program
Parent Meeting on Dec. 14
The next monthly meeting for parents with children in the Huntington School District's dual language program is scheduled for Tues. Dec. 14 in the Jack Abrams School auditorium.
"I have a dual language parent meeting every month," said Carmen Kasper, district director of foreign language, ESL and dual language programs. Topics range from state proficiency and Regents exams and the benefits of being bilingual to the scope and sequence of Spanish language instruction from kindergarten through high school.
"We always have time for an open discussion," Ms. Kasper said. "For the September and October meetings, I had teachers come to talk to the parents. In September, Ms. Erika Sabogal discussed how students are taught at the kindergarten level and in October, Mr. Glenn Edwards did the same thing, but for second grade."
At the Dec. 14 meeting, Jessica Medina and Lorena Diaz will speak with parents about the sixth grade Spanish course that culminates with the June Regents exam.
Ms. Kasper said she believes it is important for the parents of students in the dual language program at every grade to know of the importance of the sixth grade course because the youngsters in it receive high school credit upon passing the Regents. "This will be of interest to all parents because their children will be in that course when they get to sixth grade," she said.
