Sophomore Paces Blue Devil
Girls' Tennis

Olivia Ammirati turned in a strong sophomore season for the Huntington High School girls' tennis team this fall, winning a majority of her matches in No. 1 singles and compiling an overall mark of 7-4 en route to All-League and All-Division honors.

Blue Devil coach Jamie Fishlow said Ammirati sought out the No. 1 singles position, fully knowing she would have to square off againt the best player on every opposing team. "She worked hard and displayed confidence in her game," Fishlow said. "Her style is to never back down." The teenager went 5-4 in No. 1 singles and 2-0 in the No. 2 singles slot.

Senior Alexandra Ottas recorded an 8-3 record in No. 2 singles. The team captain earned All-League recognition for her fine play. She also went 1-1 in the No. 1 spot. Fishlow said Ottas was "consistently strong in second singles." She was known to especially bear down in three-set matches.

Huntington finished the season with a 3-7 record in Suffolk League II (3-8 overall). "It was a young team with a very strong work ethic," Fishlow said. "Although we only had three wins, there were signs of winning ways to come down the road."

Huntington's starting line-up also included Amelia Eisen, Kristin Hartmann, Marissa Schedler, Rebecca Palladino, Jamie Brown, Samantha Dever, Pauline McGlone and Melanie Grossman. Emily Feldman also saw action in No. 3 doubles in a pair of meets.

Fishlow said the Blue Devils demonstrated a "very strong commitment to the team and to each other. They were also committed to improving the overall program and to improving our winning percentage."

With eight starters eligible to return next fall, Fishlow anticipates a better record. "The players are looking to play more in the off-season," he said.
