Huntington School Briefs
The Huntington School District’s energy cost avoidance program has been ongoing since February 2001 and has saved taxpayers big bucks. Through January 31, 2010, the district has avoided $2,916,618 in energy costs. Over the past year alone, $404,237 or 30.47 percent of the entire energy bill was saved.
The program targets non-school hours, including nights, weekends and vacation periods, as well as utilizing the smarter use of energy during the regular school day. There is no impact on classroom activities.
Ithaca Connection
Seven Huntington High School seniors have been accepted by Ithaca College for the fall semester at last count. The group includes Casey Singer, Tatiana DiPaola, Chelsea Hines, Haley Garofalo, Katherine Levittan, Erin McGoldrick and Daniel Smith.
Personnel Update
Huntington High School special education teacher Allison Russo has resigned her position, effective June 25. Washington Primary School speech teacher Blake Woodworth has been granted a child care related leave of absence for the 2010/11 school year. Carmen Kasper, district director of foreign language, ESL and bilingual programs, has been appointed administrator of the Saturday academy at J. Taylor Finley Middle School. Her $1,500 stipend will be funded by a State Education Dept. bilingual grant.
Food Service Bid Awarded
Huntington School Board members have awarded a bid for food service management services to Whitsons Food Service for the balance of the 2009/10 and 2010/11 fiscal years.
Memo of Agreement Approved
A memorandum of agreement between the Huntington School District and the union representing the district’s food service workers has been approved. Terms of the contract are retroactive to July 1, 2007 and will run through June 30, 2010.
The agreement provides salary increases of 3.5 percent for 2007/08, 2 percent for 2008/09 and 1 percent for 2009/10.
Budget Transfers
Huntington School Board members approved two budget transfers between accounts to cover costs associated with paper at Jack Abrams Intermediate School ($696) and for music arrangement ($1,047).
LI Ballet Theater
The Long Island Ballet Theater has been added to the list of approved users of Huntington School District facilities. The group requested to use the J. Taylor Finley Middle School auditorium on May 16 between 2:30 – 6 p.m. for a music and dance concert. A crowd of 200 is expected.
