Sandoval Leads Blue Devils over Sayville

Chris Sandoval enjoyed quite a day. The Huntington High School senior won the discuss, finished second in shot put and ran the lead leg in the 4 x 800m relay that took first place as the Blue Devil boys’ track and field team flew past previously undefeated Sayville, 81-56.

Sandoval threw the discus 136’5 and tossed the shot 40’5 to make Huntington head coach Ron Wilson a very happy man. He’s been a thrower in our track program since his seventh grade year,” Wilson said. “This year he’s been doing some extra training with in the distance events and ran an impressive 2:13 for the first leg of the relay. That’s very swift for a thrower!”

Junior Richie Fernandez continued his improvement in the shot put against Sayville, throwing a personal best of 45’11 to place first. Junior Dante Allen finished third in the discus (119’10) and in the 200m dash (24.3 seconds) and ran the third leg of the 4 x 400m relay team that placed first in 3:39. Junior Eric Szilagy grabbed second place in the 400m dash (54.2 seconds), first in the triple jump (39’7) and was the anchor for the 4 x 400m relay team.

“Our sophomores also had a great day,” gushed Wilson. Ryan Ackerman won the mile in 4:43 and placed second in the 800m run in 2:06, both personal best records. Ackerman was also the second leg of the 4 x 400m relay team. Trayvon Toney placed third in the shot put 40’1 and second in the discus (122’11). He was also the second leg of the 4 x 100m relay team that placed first in 46.1 seconds.

Sharif Jarvis showed that he could be a point earner for the team as well when he set a fast pace in the 3200m run and kept his engine in overdrive to hold on and win in 10:51. He also ran the fourth leg of the 4 x 800m relay team.

Danny McQuade picked up third place finishes in both the high jump and the triple jump. He placed second in the 110m high hurdles and the 400m intermediate hurdles.

Eighth grader Tyler Wolfe, who has been nicknamed “Prodigy” by the team, finished third in the 800m run and ran the third leg of the swift 4 x 800m relay. Freshman Danny Benitez took the baton second in that same relay and was able to keep pace with Sayville and position Huntington well for its ultimate victory in the event.

Senior Eugene Moody continues to enjoy a fine spring in what is his first year with the program. He placed first in the 200m dash (22.7 seconds), second in the 100m dash (11.4 seconds), second in the long jump (18’10) and was the third leg of the 4 x 100m relay team. “He’s new to the sport and is starting to pick up on the track and field lingo and skills that are needed in order to be successful,” Wilson said.

Also new to the sport are sophomores Quran Carter, who placed first in the long jump (19’9) and third in the 100m dash in (11.9 seconds) and Darrell Thomas who was fourth in the 100m dash in 12.1 seconds.  The pair also competed on the 4 x 100m relay team.

As the season races along, Wilson is hopeful his athletes are heading to post-season success.
