Former Assistant Superintendent Dies
Dr. William Southworth, a former assistant superintendent for elementary education in the Huntington School District, has passed away. He was 91 years old.
Dr. Southworth served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and later earned undergraduate and graduate degrees at Marquette University. He later taught and worked as an administrator in Milwaukee, Wisconsin before moving to New York to become a principal in Port Washington.
In 1961, Dr. Southworth obtained a doctorate at New York University. He came to Huntington in 1965 during a period of turbulence in the district, working under Superintendent Charles C. St. Clair. He left after only two years to lead St. John’s University’s department of administration and supervision in the School of Education. He retired from the college in 1984.
In his later years, Dr. Southworth became an expert in parliamentary procedures and arbitrated disputes involving such procedures. He wrote many articles and columns on the topic and McGraw-Hill later turned 75 of them into an edited book. He also wrote three novels involving the sea and the Navy.
Dr. Southworth’s wife, Violet, predeceased him in 2006. His two children, Linda and Geoffrey both graduated from Huntington High School. Geoffrey passed away in 2008. He is also survived by three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
March Madness
The annual March Madness game between faculty and staff members from Woodhull and Jack Abrams intermediate schools still has folks talking. The game was held before a packed house in Louis D. Giani Gymnasium was packed at Huntington High School.
“March Madness was so well attended that we may have to move it to the Nassau Colleseum next year,” joked Mary Stokkers, principal of Jack Abrams School. “Woodhull won again but it was a very good game. The spirit on both sides was high and each school raised money for their students. This year Jack Abrams had a live Husky show up as their mascot. Woodhull had a brass section rallying the crowd.”

Ron Wilson Devastated by Fire
Ron Wilson, a Huntington High School dean of students and three-sport athletic coach, has the support of colleagues as he rebounds from a devastating fire that destroyed his family’s home. He lost his entire wardrobe and other possessions and was forced to live in a hotel until a rental unit was made available, pending the reconstruction of the house that burned down.
Mr. Wilson’s coaching colleagues have donated money that Georgia McCarthy, Huntington’s director of physical education, health and interscholastic athletics, used to purchase various gift cards the well-like educator can use to help pay for much needed replacement items to help get through this stressful time.
