Astoria Federal Savings Steps up for Grandfriends
As the Huntington High School Grandfriends club puts the finishing touches on its annual Senior Senior Prom, the teenagers are grateful to have received a $600 contribution from Astoria Federal Savings to help defray expenses for the gathering that is expected to attract several hundred senior citizens from across Long Island.
This year’s Senior Senior Prom is set for Friday, May 7 from 4 – 6 p.m. in the high school cafeteria. Grandfriends club members will serve as hosts for the event. There will be food, dancing, a DJ playing tunes the guests want to hear and even the crowning of a prom king and queen.
The dance is open to any senior citizen in the community. The high school, which is located at the intersection of Oakwood and McKay Roads, is completely handicapped accessible. For more information call faculty advisor Suzie Biagi at 673-2001.
The donation from Astoria Federal Savings is $100 more than the bank gave to the Grandfriends club last year. Mrs. Biagi has invited the bank to attend the May 7 prom.
Members of the Huntington High School student government will also be pitching in to help insure the senior citizens have a good time. This is the 16th year that high school students are sponsoring the dance.
Mrs. Biagi and high school librarian Camille DeCanio serve as co-faculty advisors of the Interact-Grandfriends club. Members pay visits to local nursing homes and assisted living residences, participating in such activities as board games, baking, crafts, reading books and magazines, letter writing and just talking, listening and laughing with the senior citizens.
The Grandfriends fundraise throughout the year in order to put on a successful Senior Senior Prom. “Watching our teenagers interact with senior citizens is refreshing and inspiring and is so rewarding for everyone involved,” Mrs. Biagi said.
