Trustees Approve 6th Grade Center at Jack Abrams School

At Monday night’s meeting of the Huntington School Board, trustees discussed a possible reorganization on the intermediate grade level and Superintendent John J. Finello and the district’s three assistant superintendents made short presentations of their findings on the facility, personnel, curriculum, instructional and financial aspects of moving all fourth and fifth graders to Woodhull School and creating a sixth grade center at Jack Abrams School.
Trustees discussed the possibility of allowing parents to choose to keep their fifth grade child at Jack Abrams School to avoid the need for bringing three modular classrooms to the Woodhull site. There was also a discussion about building additional permanent classrooms at Woodhull School to provide long-term space flexibility there and altogether eliminate the need for renting portable rooms.
Trustees then voted 4-3 to create a sixth grade center in September 2010 at Jack Abrams School. Voting in favor of the motion was Bill Dwyer, Emily Rogan, Christine Bene and Kim Brown. Trustees Elizabeth Black, John Paci and Richard McGrath voted no on the proposal.
The possibility of putting forth a capital proposition at some point that addresses space issues on the primary school level was also addressed. Trustees held off on approving a larger and more expensive facility study of Town Hall. The study would cost an additional $7,250 above the spatial needs analysis that was already performed by the district’s architects at a cost of $1,500.
