New Sixth Grade Math Textbook Approved

A new math textbook is coming to sixth grade classrooms in the Huntington School District after trustees approved the acquisition of Glencoe McGraw-Hill’s New York edition of “Math Connects: Concepts, Skills and Problem Solving.”

The book’s chapters cover algebra number patterns and functions, statistics and graphs, operations with decimals, fractions and decimals, operations with fractions, ratio, proportion and functions, percent and probability, systems of measurements, geometry angles and polygons, perimeter, area and volume, integers and transformations and algebra properties and equations.

The cost to acquire the needed copies of the new book is pegged at $24,088. It will be funded through the current year’s budget. The book early earned the endorsement of Huntington’s Educational Development Committee after a thorough vetting process.

Dr. Kenneth A. Card, Jr., assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, told Huntington School Board members that the new textbook was written by a group that looked at the content students needed to be familiar with in order to be successful in both geometry and algebra and then “back-mapped” the development of math content, concepts and procedures to ensure a solid foundation and seamless transition from grade to grade.

Features of the new book include:

• Focus on concepts, skills and problem solving for a balanced program.

• Promotes vocabulary to build mathematical literacy.

• Provides intervention options prescribed within the program.

• Applies a comprehensive assessment system, including diagnostic, formative and summative assessments in addition to self-assessment options for students.

• Enhanced differentiated instruction through lesson interleaves with leveled instructional alternatives for each lesson.
