Burnett Leads Strong Blue Devil JV

Hannah Burnett led a strong Huntington High School junior varsity girls’ basketball team this past season, which finished the campaign with a 12-4 mark.

Burnett averaged nine points per game. Blue Devil head coach Jim McCabe called the freshman “a true leader who led the team by example.” Seventh grader Heather Forster also shined, leading the squad in rebounds and averaging eight points per game. Forster and freshman Jackie Contino gave Huntington “a tough 1-2 punch under the basket,” the coach said.

“This team had no returning starters and still managed to tie for first place in league play,” McCabe said. Point guard Laurelle Byrne-Cody was tops among Blue Devil players in assists. McCabe called the energetic sophomore “one of the hardest workers. She is always hustling and has a great competitive nature.”

Freshman Lucy Gulino was another key to the successful season. “She’s a pure shooter who makes teams pay if they leave her open,” McCabe said.

“Most of our top players will be moving on to varsity,” the coach said. “The young core of eighth graders that came up to JV this year will be very important.” That group includes Emma Hughes, Joellen Ceide and Cynthia Gowani. Alexis Thompson and Courtney Lawrence will also be looked to for big contributions next winter.

“Despite being young, this team was very hard working and always gave their all. Four middle school students contributed a lot to the team,” McCabe said. “The future looks bright for Huntington girls’ basketball.”
