The Start of Something Special

With its fabulous run of consecutive state championships still in the mind of the community, the Huntington boys’ lacrosse team is looking to start flexing its muscles again this spring as 17 Blue Devil players return to the varsity squad.

“Our goal this season is to go 10-4 in league play and advance to the play-offs,” head coach Paul McDermott said matter-of-factly. Huntington was ranked No. 11 in a Suffolk Division II pre-season poll, but players are hoping to surprise many opponents.

McDermott expects senior Andrew Sheerin and junior John McGrath to hold down goalie duties. Senior Paul Aramanda and juniors Calvin Bollar, Peter Kingston and Ryan Mulligan will play close defense. The midfield looks to be patrolled by sophomore Tyre Brown, juniors Duncan Murchison, Will Coffey and Pat O’Brien and seniors Ryan Greenhill and Pat Brady

Sophomore Conor Reilly and senior Chris McArdle will alternate at long-stick midfield. Junior Nick Saputo, a face-off and scoring specialist and the 2009 Rookie of the Year, will be looked to for solid offensive play along with senior attackmen Nick Schoen and Jack Dever. Junior Jack Castelli seems poised for a possible break-out season on offense.

“This year’s team has benefited from off-season lacrosse and speed training,” McDermott said. “If we stay focused and healthy our season will be a success.”
