Huntington School Briefs

 

This year’s expanded science fair was a hit at Flower Hill Primary School. Earning first place were kindergartener Allison Quinn, first grader Nate Coulter, second grader Catherine Jamison and third grader Matthew Quinn. Luke Squillante (kindergarten), Brianna White (first grade), Cole Pillion (second grade) and Alexander Higgins (third grade) grabbed second place finishes.

 

“The science fair was a big success and a tremendous learning opportunity for our students,” Flower Hill Principal Marlon Small said. “They were able to learn about the scientific method and engage in hands-on experiments. All our little scientists were excited to display the projects as this was the culmination of their hard work.”

Art Honor Society Induction

The Huntington High School art honor society induction ceremony originally scheduled for March 24 will now be held on April 20 in the Heritage Museum (room 140) from 6:45 - 7:30 p.m. The public is invited to attend. There will be a small reception outside the museum room following the ceremony. 

Large Crowd at Washington School

Principal Marsha Neville was overjoyed with the turnout of parents and family members at the evening science fair at Washington Primary School. A steady stream of visitors came through the building’s main entrance and made their way down the hall to the gym where dozens of projects were displayed on long tables.

 

Winning first place honors were Emily Geller (kindergarten), Chelsea Rodriquez (first grade), Grace Tyrell (second grade) and Benjamin Ribando (third grade). 

Parrett to Sing at Game

Nicole Parrett, a fourth grade teacher at Woodhull Intermediate School, is heading back onto the field for the Long Island Ducks. No, she won’t be suiting up in a uniform. Ms. Parrett is scheduled to sing the national anthem prior to the game Sunday, August 22 at 5:05 p.m. “I auditioned last year and got the gig,” she said about the 2009 season when she also sang before a game. “This year, I asked about auditioning and they said I did not need to, since I sang last year for them.”

 

A crowd of about 150 Woodhull supporters turned out last year to hear Ms. Parrett sing and to watch the game.

Southdown Science Fair Winners

The Southdown Primary School science fair drew plenty of interest from students and parents. The youngsters developed numerous interesting projects, some that were downright intriguing. A big crowd turned out to view the finished projects.

 

Earning first place awards were kindergartener Eliza Walther (Which color is warmest?), first grader Robby Harrington (Where did all the stars go?), second grader Baylie Larsen (How long will it take me to teach my babysitter three American Sign Language signs?) and third grader Jonah Anastos (Which bridge is the strongest?)

Personnel Moves

Huntington High School special education aide Kathryn Einhorn has been granted a leave of absence from March 12 to approximately April 5.

 

Kathleen Thompson, Angela Turner, Meghan Jost and Lisa Grammatico have all been authorized to work as substitute teachers in the after-school math and English language arts program at Jack Abrams Intermediate School. The will be paid $48.01 per hour when their services are required. Ms. Jost was also added to the substitute teacher list for the Jack Abrams School homework help program, which is funded by through a Title I grant.

 

Diane Regan was approved to work on a fourth grade social studies curriculum mapping project over the course of three sessions in April. She will be paid $48.01 per hour for up to six hours of work.

 

Trustees also approved Jennifer Guigliano, Catherine O’Connor and Melinda Weissman to serve as parent members on the CSE and CPSE.

Bidding Threshold Increased

Huntington School Board members have been notified that the bidding threshold for public works contracts has been increased from $20,000 to $30,000. The threshold is related to the purchase of services that are provided for in the repair and/or maintenance of a facility. Items below that amount can be obtained through the use of quotes from vendors.
