Nutri-Café is Now Open
There's a new resource available to Huntington School District parents and students interested in reviewing and planning cafeteria meals that meet their tastes, nutritional standards and dietary requirements.
Whitsons Culinary Group, the district's food service consultants, has created internet-based nutrition tools for both the elementary and secondary levels. The new resources can be viewed and used by visiting www.whitsons.com/nutrition.
The Nutri-Café for elementary youngsters "is a virtual serving line, featuring a young girl who narrates users through the site," according to a Whitsons promotional flyer posted on the Huntington School District website's (www.hufsd.edu) food service program page.
Users can select foods (hot entrees, salads, pizza, sandwiches, etc.) and learn nutrition information about each item. By dragging the items onto a tray and moving down the virtual serving line, users will see a chart displaying information on fat, calories, vitamins, etc., and cumulative totals for the entire meal.
Smart Calc for secondary students lets users choose breakfast and lunch menu items and calculate nutritional information for each of the foods. Users can learn more about the amount of such items as sodium, carbohydrates, saturated fats, iron, fiber, cholesterol, calories, etc. With a simple click of the mouse, items can be added or deleted and the totals adjust accordingly.
