Shira Moskowitz Embraces Huntington

Shira Moskowitz's story is an interesting one. She's a senior at Huntington High School after transferring there as a junior from Solomon Schechter, a private Jewish day school she attended since kindergarten.

"Switching to Huntington really changed my perspective on the community," Ms. Moskowitz said. "Although I had lived here since fourth grade, I never realized the extreme socio-economic spectrum that the school encompasses. I also knew few people who came from different backgrounds than me and believed differently."

During her sophomore year at Solomon Schechter, Ms. Moskowitz spent a semester in Israel through an international exchange program. Her transition to Huntington complete in every way, Ms. Moskowitz said her senior year schedule is filled with AP and honors classes.

She's a member of the chamber choir and the drama club (the curtain goes up on "Skin of Our Teeth"on Nov. 5-6), as well as the National Honor Society, Science Honor Society (she's the secretary), Spanish Honor Society, Key club, the Acapella group, and she's on the editorial board of the high school student newspaper, The Dispatch.

"I love being involved in the school through clubs and school spirit and am looking forward to homecoming and spirit week; I've already begun planning my outfits," Ms. Moskowitz said enthusiastically.

As immersed in school clubs and societies as she is, Ms. Moskowitz's primary co-curricular activity since her freshman year has been NFTY NAR or the North American Federation of Temple Youth's New York area region. "I currently serve as the religious and cultural vice-president," she said. "It is a time consuming, but rewarding job and I have already piloted two new programs for the region; a service writing tool kit and a Hebrew word-of-the-week program. I'm really looking forward to our first weekend retreat of the year in October."

Members of Huntington's Class of 2010 are a diverse group with varied interests and an assortment of career desires. Ms. Moskowitz fits perfectly into a senior class filled with individual hopes and dream.

"I aspire to be a rabbi one day after attending a big school where I am able to engage in Jewish studies and other religions, as well as get an excellent general studies education," she said. "I am interested in schools where everyone is super-spirited." The list includes several of the finest colleges in the country.

In just two short years, Ms. Moskowitz has gained the admiration and respect of teachers at Huntington High School, which is one of the most unique melting pots on Long Island.
