Big Turnout for Fall Sports at Huntington High School
The fall season has seen a large turnout for the athletic teams Huntington High School. There are 330 students participating on 18 varsity and junior varsity squads, according to a report compiled by Director of Athletics Georgia D. McCarthy and sent to School Board members.
The eight boys’ teams have 160 participants and the 10 girls’ squads are filled with 170 athletes. Junior varsity football has the largest roster with 39 players. Varsity football has 36 players. The two high school boys’ soccer teams have a combined 45 players while the girls’ teams are filled with 40 athletes.
The varsity and junior varsity girls’ tennis teams have a combined 22 players. There are a dozen boys’ golf team members. Girls’ swimming has 38 student-athletes participating, including several from the middle school level. The team at J. Taylor Finley Middle School was eliminated this year for budgetary reasons.
The high school field hockey program has 41 players on the two teams’ rosters, five more than last fall and nine more than two years ago. The girls’ volleyball program is filled with 21 athletes. The varsity boys’ cross country team has a roster of nine while the girls’ cross country squad has grown by three over last year and now stands at eight runners. The boys’ varsity and JV volleyball teams have a combined 19 players.
With so many teams and so many students participating, space is at a premium both indoors and outdoors. The athletic department has found it necessary to move some teams off-site for practices and games.
