Meet the Coach at Finley Draws Crowd
A capacity crowd at last week’s mandatory meeting of parents, student-athletes and coaches at J. Taylor Finley Middle School, was a sight to behold for Georgia D. McCarthy, district director of athletics.
The crowd in the school gym numbered in the hundreds. The late afternoon agenda included a review of some basic athletic department rules and the Blue Devil program philosophy. “I am so pleased that so many parents showed up and how respectful the student-athletes were during this meeting,” Mrs. McCarthy said.
Following the formal presentation in the gym, individual coaches met with parents and players from their respective team, outlining their goals for the year, expectations and procedures.
There are seven teams and nine coaches at Finley this fall. “Our coaching staff will provide an environment where a student will learn and understand the importance of commitment, dedication, work ethic, cooperation, time management, responsibility, self-discipline, values, ethics and, most importantly, respect for one another,” Mrs. McCarthy said.
Parents and student-athletes learned about academic and attendance requirements and policies concerning equipment and transportation, along with the issues of substance abuse, hazing, general behaviors and communicating with coaches. Mrs. McCarthy also discussed the district’s full-time athletic trainer, Kelly Hatzmann and the services she provides.
“As athletes and human beings we want what we want,” Mrs. McCarthy said. “But, we have to understand that we have to put our individual needs aside in order to have success as a team. That is what high school coaches, college admission officers and management is looking for in a person today. This is what we are striving for here in Huntington and that is why we have been so successful.”
The Huntington Booster Club was also on the scene, selling Blue Devil gear out of its large trailer and registering dozens of new members.
