Commemorative Brick Walkway Installed, New One Planned

A commemorative brick walkway in the main plaza near the entrance to Huntington High School has been installed. A total of 60 bricks of varying sizes were sold over the past year, ranging from 26 ruby red 4 x 8 inch bricks to the special centerpiece cut of bluestone, which measures 18 x 18 inches and was purchased and gifted by the members of the Class of 2010.

An attractive display pattern has ignited new interest in the project and led to many phone calls and e-mails from alumni and community members inquiring about the possibility of purchasing a brick.

Parent Elaine May, who was instrumental in organizing the walkway initiative, said a second commemorative area is now being planned. A currently paved path stretching from the south parking field to the main plaza has been identified as the site for the next installment of commemorative bricks when enough of them are sold.

The installation process was the Eagle Scout project of Tyler May, a Huntington senior who is active in the school community and is a member of the Blue Devil marching band. He is planning several car wash fundraisers this fall to help defray expenses he incurred related to the work.

The 60 engraved bricks were purchased by alumni and community members in honor of loved ones. The concrete sidewalks in front of Huntington High School were replaced last summer. The area, which sits in a well-traveled section of the plaza, has been drawing the eyes of students and staff, as well as visitors to the building.

Proceeds from the ongoing initiative will be used to pay for development of an outdoor area for student study, relaxation and recreation during free periods at the school. A fundraising goal of $40,000 has been established.

Different size bricks are being made available. For example, for $100 a 4” x 8” brick can be purchased, offering space for three lines of 14 characters each for engraving. An 8” x 8” brick is available for $125. It offers space for six lines of 14 characters each. Also available is an 8” x 8” bluestone for $250. It, too, provides space for six lines of 14 characters each. A one-foot by one-foot piece of bluestone is being sold for $400. It will provide space for six lines of 14 characters per line. Each space between words counts as one character.

Organizers of the initiative are continuing to reach out to current students and their families, alumni and the local business community. “Your children will enjoy seeing their own names or family names engraved in a brick that is part of ‘their’ school,” states a letter to parents. “Likewise, you will enjoy knowing that all of the funds raised for this program will be dedicated to our school.”
