Blue Devils Look to Kimchy’s Offense

The fall season won’t be a walk in the park by any measure for the Huntington field hockey team, but the Blue Devils are confident they have the personnel to be successful.

“This year we have a young team, but I think we are going to be very competitive,” head coach Jillian Talleur Seher said. Huntington is seeded fifth in the division and will be playing the top teams in the league. But, they aren’t worried. In fact, the squad is looking forward to it.

“The girls have developed a lot of skill in pre-season and are anxious to begin their season,” Seher said. Huntington will be led on offense by senior Alexandra Kimchy and junior Kianna Freitag and on defense by seniors Liz McGovern and Emma Copp.

“We expect to see juniors Beth Johnson and Ally Hackett become a strong force on the field,” Seher said. Senior goalie Isabel Sorrentino will be back for her final year “and is going to be a huge support for the team,” the coach said.

The Blue Devils finished with an 8-7 mark last season. But, Huntington must make do this fall without the services of Kerry Hicks (All-County), Catalina Lopez (All-Conference), Allison Conlon (All-Tournament), Faith Maybeck, Adelia Federici and Christina Coughlan, all of whom were lost to graduation.

Kimchy, who has a level of finesse like no other player on the team, earned All-Division honors as a junior. She is a legitimate star in the sport and clearly one of the keys to this season. Sorrentino, another All-Division player, saved the Blue Devils in more than one close game last year and will counted on to duplicate those same heroics this year.

“We were inconsistent and played to the level of our competition,” Seher said in honest assessment of last season. “We were as good as the best, but also could lose to the worst. The team was dedicated and cared about their success and enjoyed what they were doing.”

That was then and this is now. The Blue Devils are looking to improve on last season’s finish and push their way deep into post-season play.
