Blue Devil Girls’ Volleyball Rebuilds
With most of its top players lost to graduation, the Huntington High School girls’ volleyball team is officially in the midst of a rebuilding period. The Blue Devils return just two returning players and will look to some talented newcomers to fill out the line-up.
“We will be rebuilding the team almost from scratch,” said Caroline Reilly, Huntington’s head coach. “We are going to try and be competitive, but have a very young team.”
Veterans Lauren Visbal and Elizabeth Mohr are back in the fold and the Blue Devils will be relying heavily on their expertise. Seniors Chelsea Hoole Shlakman and Keiry Alfaro are in line for major playing time and juniors are Isabelle Senat and Krista Castillo will also spend time on the court.
“Although the rest of the team is sophomores and freshmen, they are a very talented bunch of players,” Reilly said. The coach is “expecting many good things” from setters Lydia Aparicio, Natalie Acton and Samantha Greenidge. Blocker Mia Hinton is young but already displays plenty of talent and Ranisha Witherspoon is showing daily improvement.
“Laurelle Byrne Cody is turning out to be an outstanding outside hitter with backup from Rebecca Leach and Haley Brown,” Reilly said. While Huntington will face many strong teams, no one is waving the white flag just yet.
“We are expecting to lose some games but are looking to stay competitive with our eyes on the future,” Reilly said. “This is a very young and up-and-coming team. If volleyball is a sport that you were considering playing, now is the time to brush up on your skills.”
Reilly has sketched out a multi-year plan to solidify volleyball in Huntington. “We are looking to rebuild the entire program from the bottom up,” she said. “We will look to recruit from the middle school and hope to introduce some clinics to the intermediate level this year.”
