Huntington School Board Sets Goals
Similar to every other district on Long Island, if not the state, the Huntington School District is faced with many challenges as it moves forward to educate thousands of young people in the community. When deciding which areas to devote a little extra attention to, trustees engaged in a considerable amount of reflection, both publicly and privately.
Following discussions that spanned several summer meetings, the Huntington School Board unanimously approved a set of five goals for itself during the 2009/10 school year.
The adopted goals include:
- Develop a two-year district financial plan taking into consideration the need for capital improvements and anticipated future reductions in state and federal funding.
- Develop a schedule whereby the high school and middle school principals and district directors will report to the Board of Education at least once a year on academic progress within their school or discipline, including a report from the executive director of special education and student support services on indicators related to disproportionality.
- Develop a multi-year instructional technology plan.
- Develop a plan to house the expanding elementary dual language program.
- Develop a concrete plan to address the critical issue regarding space in all schools.
The Huntington School Board consists of seven community volunteers who have each been elected by district residents at a public vote. The trustees serve three-year terms without any type of financial compensation. They hold public meetings throughout the year.
Currently serving as trustees are President Bill Dwyer, Vice-President Emily Rogan, Christine Bene, Elizabeth Black, Kim Brown, Richard McGrath and John P. Paci III.
