Volunteer Mentors Needed for Science Research Students

As Huntington High School’s science research program looks to advance to the next level, a call has been issued for community residents with a scientific background to serve as volunteer mentors for 19 students developing projects for regional and national competitions.

Science teacher Lori Pyzocha, who heads the research program, and David M. Casamento, the department’s director, have been working closely together over the past year to offer an enhanced research experience to high school students. By any measure the program did advance by leaps and bounds last year and the two educators are hoping to continue that upward momentum.

Mr. Casamento said local scientists interested in mentoring a research program student can either contact him (dcasamento@hufsd.edu) or Ms. Pyzocha (lpyzocha@hufsd.edu) for more information. Prospective mentors can arrange a visit to meet with Mr. Casamento, Ms. Pyzocha and the research students. “We will only be matching students and scientists with similar interests,” Mr. Casamento said.

Ms. Pyzocha has settled on a list of competitions that this year’s research program students will enter. Mentors will play a key role in helping the teenagers reach their potential. “The community in the past has been very supportive of the program and we look forward to working with anyone interested in mentoring one of our students,” Mr. Casamento said.
