Huntington High School Paving Project Nears Completion
A summer-long capital project at Huntington High School that has involved removal and reconstruction of the 51 year old curbs, sidewalks and roadway stretching from the McKay Road entrance to the Holdsworth Drive exit is nearing completion. A new security booth has also been installed.
The work was expected to be completed by now, but paving has been delayed several days, setting back the schedule, much to the disappointment of school officials. The delay has caused the cancellation of a district-wide convocation for 800 employees that had been slated for the high school auditorium on Tues. Sept. 8 at 8 a.m. Instead, faculty and support staff members will report directly to their assigned buildings, including those who work at the high school.
Despite the delay, Huntington High School will be open for classes and regular activities on Weds. Sept 9. Varsity and JV fall teams have been holding practices this week and students and teachers and administrators have been in the building, adjusting schedules and preparing classrooms.
Suffolk Paving Corp. won a $670,331 bid to perform the work and now the two-month long capital project is finally nearing its finish. Curb and sidewalk reconstruction is complete and the original asphalt has been removed. The sub-base material will be excavated this week and replaced with recycled concrete aggregate base. “The sub-base material did not pass the composition tests that were performed last week,” explained Superintendent John J. Finello.
After the material currently in place is removed and replaced, the new base will be rolled and readied for paving with the first layer of asphalt. “The binder course will be paved on Tuesday and the second or finished course will be paved on Saturday (Sept. 12),” Mr. Finello said. “Once the binder course is paved it will be drivable. Cars and buses can come and go.” About two weeks later, the new roadway and parking areas will be striped with painted lines.
