Music Field Trip
A group of 150 Huntington High School students will travel to Virginia Beach, Virginia from April 30 to May 2 to participate in a music competition, including comprehensive written and taped evaluations. Members of the orchestra and chorus will participate in the excursion, which was requested by teachers Lisa Leonardi and Veronica Escamilla. The teenagers will be chaperoned by 20 adults. The trip will also include some sightseeing opportunities at Colonial Williamsburg and nearby locations and a trip to an amusement park for added fun.
To prepare for the trip, participants will rehearse daily in school. “The students will be held to very high musical expectations on very difficult literature,” according to a field trip instructional plan submitted as part of the approval process.
The group will leave at 7 a.m. on Friday, April 30 and expects to return on Sunday, May 2 by 9 p.m. “Students will be preparing music on a competitive level which is a more daunting and rigorous experience than preparing for a concert,” according to the proposal.
The trip will cost approximately $250 per person.
Lynch Ballet Company
Huntington School Board members approved the addition of Lynch Ballet Company to the list of organizations authorized to use district facilities. According to its mission statement “the Lynch Ballet Company provides professional quality performing opportunities to aspiring young dancers on Long Island. It offers arts and education programs in the public schools to promote the appreciation of classical ballet on Long Island.”
Lynch Ballet is a non-for-profit company and 95 percent of its members are town residents. The group plans on using the Huntington High School auditorium to put on a performance of “The Nutcracker.” It plans to use the facility on Dec. 17, 18, 19 and 20 and expects about 400 people to be in attendance.
