Southdown School Recognizes its Bus Drivers
The Southdown Primary School community depends upon the bus drivers from the Huntington Coach Corp. to transport more than 350 students each day. Making sure the youngsters get to school and then back home again safely and without undue delay takes more than just a little skill.
To express their thanks for a job well done, Southdown students and staff provided bus drivers with hot coffee and donuts on a recent morning. Principal Michelle Marino called the day “a huge success.”
Bus Driver Appreciation Day is now in its sixth year at the school. “The children made adorable cards filled with messages of appreciation,” Mrs. Marino said. “The drivers were thrilled to be recognized and were thankful for the coffee and donuts.”
The event was the school’s way of saying thanks to the dedicated professionals that service students each day. Teachers and support staff members said the day was an opportunity to teach children about the need to recognize the efforts of others and the power of the simple words “thank you.”
“The food was donated by members of the Southdown green team,” Mrs. Marino explained. The green team is comprised of the principal and a group of teachers who work together to facilitate direct instruction at the school’s ‘Splash’ assemblies, reinforcing appropriate behavior (such as being safe, respectful and responsible) in all areas of the school, including the bus.
The Huntington Coach employees expressed their gratitude as they chatted on the sidewalk with members of the school community while downing coffee and munching on a donut before climbing back aboard and settling in behind the steering wheel.
