The Yorker Club is Back

The Yorker club is set to make a comeback. Huntington School Board members recently approved a budget transfer that will provide funds to establish a stipend for a club advisor, the first step in re-establishing the group.

Joseph Leavy, the district’s director of humanities, requested the budget transfer and helped spearhead the drive to restart the Yorker club at J. Taylor Finley Middle School. Trustees have also approved the appointment of social studies teacher Esmeralda Tello as club advisor with a stipend of $1,151.

The club, which has chapters across the state, supports historical research. Re-establishing it in Huntington “will enable students to conduct enriched work in history and students will be guided in designing projects to enter the local regional and, hopefully, state National History Day competition,” Mr. Leavy said.

Finley had a Yorker club several years ago and Mr. Leavy said it was “highly successful” at the time. It’s his hope this latest version quickly takes root and provides students with enhanced opportunities to explore history.
