Huntington JV Blanks Harborfields, 14-0

On a cold and rainy afternoon the Huntington junior varsity football team bested Harborfields, 14-0, despite the normally productive Blue Devil air attack being crippled as a result of the brutal elements.

Huntington took the passing constraints in stride and turned up its defensive efforts by several notches. “Our game plan was to blitz and blitz often,” said Ron Wilson, who coaches the team along with Todd Jamison. “We did exactly that.” The Blue Devils held the Tornadoes to 47 yards of total offense in the first half.

“Our offense didn't punt once, but a slippery ball caused us to lose possession two out of the three times we fumbled the ball,” frowned Wilson. Huntington’s offense fell victim to numerous penalties, too, further complicating matters.

Yet, the Blue Devils did enough things right to win. After a series of quarterback sneaks and quick dives, freshman Davon Nelson scored in the first quarter on a three-yard run. Huntington carried that same 6-0 lead into the game’s final frame.

With the Blue Devils knocking on the end zone as the minutes ticked down, Huntington’s offense fumbled the ball away on the one-yard line. But, the team’s defense rose to the occasion as sophomores Frank Caravetto and Thomas Mulligan smothered Harborfields runners on the ensuing downs.

“We actually thought we had a safety, but the officials thought otherwise,” laughed Wilson. After Harborfields punted the ball away, Huntington took possession with good field position and 2:17 remaining on the clock. Running back John Patron took several hand-offs and followed a path cleared for him by big offensive tackle Shaheem Lewis eventually finding his way into the end zone for the Blue Devils second touchdown. A two-point conversion by Jack Cutrone gave the “men in blue” a satisfying 14-0 victory.

“We have two more games left in our season and we're looking to stay healthy and finish strong,” Wilson said. The Blue Devils take on Half Hollow Hills West at home this Saturday (Oct. 24) at 9 a.m. and Miller Place the following Saturday (Oct. 31), also at 9 a.m.

“We are in the part of the season where we as coaches take a keen interest in evaluating our athletes to see if they are ready for the next level of play on varsity,” Wilson said.
