Catching up with Teddy Calligeros

Teddy Calligeros comes from a very close knit family. So leaving home to attend college 300 miles away required a period of adjustment for everyone. But, the 2009 Huntington High School grad is quickly settling in at the University of Maryland at College Park and already firing on all cylinders.

Mr. Calligeros’ parents own and operate the Golden Dolphin restaurant in Huntington village. They were frequently in the bleachers cheering as the former Blue Devil star excelled on the volleyball, basketball and track and field teams. His spirited competitive performances will long be remembered by his coaches and teammates.

The teenager’s transition to the next stage of his life is progressing nicely. “College is going great so far,” Mr. Calligeros said. “I am truly enjoying everything that Maryland has to offer, whether it is the people, athletics or just the college atmosphere.”

The Huntington alum is enrolled in a core math course along with classes in nutrition and food science, philosophy, history of sports in America and media and terrorism. “I am still planning on majoring in either accounting or marketing, but I have to finish up some core classes before I can declare my major,” Mr. Calligeros said.

At Huntington High School, Mr. Calligeros was a member of the Math honor society and earned solid grades. He helped lead the boys’ basketball team to the Suffolk Class A finals and won the Most Improved Athlete Award in boys’ track at the senior athletic awards dinner last spring.

Not surprisingly to those who know him well, one of his favorite activities when not in the classroom is still basketball. “I have been playing a lot of recreational basketball,” Mr. Calligeros said. “I am also planning on joining the club basketball team next semester. Basketball is, by far, the one thing I miss most about high school.”

The Calligeros family keeps in close contact with each other every day, which has made adjusting to the college routine a little bit easier. Maryland is a big school with plenty of opportunities around the College Park area and the freshman from Huntington plans to make the most of his four years there.

“On campus, I have been attending every home football game and am looking forward to the upcoming basketball season,” Mr. Calligeros said.
