Math Director Says Goodbye
Wayne Edwards is leaving his position as the Huntington School District’s director of math with very positive feelings about the members of his department. He will soon assume similar responsibilities in Uniondale.
“I had a wonderful time working with the math teachers here,” Mr. Edwards said. “Huntington is very fortunate to have a strong core of seasoned veterans, which includes a HEFE Spirit Award winner and a participant in the evaluation of a new textbook. The department is further enhanced by a talented group of new teachers to the profession, which includes a recent tenure recipient that has made the successful transition from Wall Street. It has also been my pleasure working with AIS teachers at the K-6 level. These are the individuals that contribute to the math program on a daily basis by sharing their extensive math knowledge with their colleagues and students.”
Mr. Edwards, who came to Huntington from a position at Mineola Middle School, was in the midst of his fifth year as department director here when he decided to leave for a new challenge. He enjoyed the relationships he forged across all grade levels and in all eight buildings.
“I would also be remiss if I did not mention working with Angela Berner every year while scoring math assessments,” he said about the district’s English language arts coordinator. “Her expertise and attention to detail is second to none.”
The departing math leader pointed to several areas of progress and pride. “Teachers from the high school and Finley have become quite adept at using SMART Board technology and they are among the leaders at implementing Castle Learning during daily instruction,” he said.
As Mr. Edwards prepares to leave his position he feels good about the job he has done in Huntington. “My goal has always been to equip teachers with the tools I believe will make them better,” he said. “I trust that they have learned from me as much as I have learned from them.”
