Huntington Booster Club Shines on its Big Day

This year’s Huntington Booster Club golf outing and dinner drew a large crowd to support the organization’s ongoing initiatives and to honor longtime Huntington physical education teacher and Blue Devil athletic coach Steve Henry.

The event raised money for the Booster Club, which typically plows all of the proceeds it raises right back into the Huntington athletic program, through a grant program, scholarships and the purchase of equipment. Participants included several Huntington School Board members, dozens of alumni, parents and friends of the athletic program.

The big crowd began arriving at mid-day to register and practice on the driving range and putting green. Coaches past and present were in the mix and several local dignitaries were on the scene, including Assemblyman Jim Conte, who presented Mr. Henry with a state citation and gave the Booster Club a $2,500 state legislative grant and Huntington Highway Superintendent William Naughton, who played the 18-hole course with a foursome.

“I can feel so much love in this room,” Mr. Henry told the packed clubhouse during a lavish buffet dinner. “I’ve always tried to do my best and am so thankful for the people I’ve worked with, the students I’ve had in class and the athletes that I’ve been fortunate to coach.”

This year’s outing drew a crowd of 86 golfers and about 175 dinner guests. “We are very happy with such a great turnout,” Booster Club President Barbara Cutrone said in the Crab Meadow clubhouse at last week’s event. “Everyone had a fun time and it was nice to be able to honor Steve Henry for all he’s done for Huntington’s students.”

Mr. Henry recounted how he graduated from nearby Walt Whitman High School and how he now resides in the Harborfields, but left no doubt where his loyalties lie. “I’m all about Huntington now,” he said. After 38 years in the district he said he isn’t about to retire “for some time.”

The Booster Club is already discussing next year’s golf outing and dinner. “It’s wonderful to see so much support for the Blue Devil athletic program and the good work the Booster Club continues to do for our community,” Superintendent John J. Finello said.
