Blue Devil Sports News
The “college athletic night” scheduled for Wednesday, October 21 at Huntington High School has been postponed until further notice. Director of Athletics Georgia McCarthy said she is waiting for the school’s guidance counselors to be trained in the “core course GPA program that we are affiliated with before I meet with parents and students to roll this out.”
Long Ride Worth It
A long ride to Eastport-South Manor High School paid off with a nifty 2-1 double overtime victory for the Huntington boys’ soccer team. Carlos Marquez continued his hot play with a goal and Christian Caballero also scored. Sal Russo and Christian Campos picked up assists. Goalies E.J. Connell and Matt Curley pitched in with a combined six saves.
Booster Club Seeks Gear
The Huntington Booster Club will be collecting gently used or new sports equipment on homecoming day (Saturday, October 17) for the Devil’s Den. The items can be dropped off at the group’s distinctive large white-and-blue trailer that will be parked adjacent to the football field that day.
Donations of such items as bats, baseball gloves, golf clubs, shin guards, soccer balls, lacrosse sticks, cleats, sneakers, tennis racquets, sweat suits, etc. are being sought.
The Booster Club is striving to assist athletes who cannot afford to purchase the items they need to participate and compete with their classmates. Folks are asked to scour their garages, basements and closets for gear they no longer need.
The Devil’s Den initiative is an effort to maximize participation, provide student-athletes with an improved experience and contribute to a strong foundation for the Blue Devil sports program and its ultimate success.
Still Undefeated
It took awhile for the Huntington girls’ soccer team to start rolling against Bellport, but by the end of the game, the Blue Devils had a 2-1 victory after Angela Bosco scored on a pass from teammate Emilie Pugliese with about nine minutes remaining on the clock.
Meredith McCourt earlier scored Huntington’s first goal. Allison Thompson picked up the assist. The Blue Devils dominated the second half, coach John Walsh said. Goalie Lori Messina made eight saves. The win was the team’s seventh straight without a loss in league play.
Offensive Drought Continues
The Huntington field hockey team has been struggling to score goals in many of its games this fall. In an exciting battle with Northport, the two teams fought to a scoreless first half tie before the Tigers notched two second half goals to win, 2-0. Huntington goalie Isabel Sorrentino recorded eight saves.
Give E.J. Connell a Raise
E.J. Connell deserves a raise after stopping 16 shots in goal for the Huntington boys’ soccer team in a 4-0 loss to state-ranked Comsewogue. The Blue Devils managed to get off five shots but never did manage to put the ball in the net against the Warriors, who entered the game ranked sixth in Class A by the New York State Sportswriters’ Assoc.
Huntington trailed 2-0 at halftime and was unable to make up the deficit in the final 40 minutes. It was the second time this fall that Comsewogue had defeated the Blue Devils, taking an earlier match-up, 2-0.
Bosco Scores Twice
The Huntington girls’ soccer team scored two second half goals to move past Eastport-South Manor, 3-2. Angela Bosco tallied two goals and one assist and Emma Hayes-Hurley also scored in one of the Blue Devils’ most satisfying victories of the fall. Allison Thompson and Michaela Acton added assists. Goalies Lori Messina and Hannah Burnett combined for five saves.
Blue Devil Offense Struggles
Despite some good defensive play, a stalled offense doomed the Huntington football team to its fifth straight loss as the Blue Devils fell to Sayville (4-1) last Saturday afternoon, 16-0.
Huntington once again had trouble moving the ball, but held up well on defense against a very good Golden Flashes squad. The Blue Devils fell behind after four minutes of play when a miscue led to Sayville notching a safety.
A relatively small crowd cheered on Huntington. The crowd was entertained at halftime by the Blue Devil marching band, which performed its 2009 show, “Strength & Honor.” A pep band sat in the stands and played throughout the game.
Amazing Times
The Huntington girls’ cross country team lost its meet to Kings Park, but the Blue Devils posted “amazing times” said coach Debra Cheskes. Celine Takekoshi finished second and Amber Lindner placed fourth. Margaret Petryk rounded out the top ten finishers.
