Jefferson School Students Get Spotted

Who doesn’t like getting a pat on the back for doing a good job? The youngsters that fill Jefferson Primary School’s classrooms are getting “spotted” for displaying all sorts of positive behaviors this fall. Like everyone else, they enjoy getting the recognition.

The school’s “green team” meets regularly to discuss the promotion of such positive behaviors as being respectful, responsible and safe. When teachers or para-professionals see a student displaying such behavior, the child earns a “spot” for making a good choice. The “spot” itself is in the form of a slip of paper containing the image of a Jaguar, the school’s mascot.

Students write their names on the slips and give them to their teacher, who places it in a jug in their classroom. At the conclusion of each month, teachers count the “spots” in their respective jug and submit the name of one youngster to be recognized as student-of-the-month.

Jefferson’s first monthly “spot assembly” was a happy occasion. A crowd of more than 400 students, teachers and aides filled the school gym on a recent afternoon. Members of the green team performed a skit on a targeted behavior and then September’s award recipients were announced to cheers.

The honorees received gold medals and handsome certificates. A photo of the group and a smiling Jefferson Principal Margaret H. Evers was snapped.

There is also a “class spot” program that involves recognizing entire classes that display exceptional behavior as they make their way through the halls to places such as the gym, cafeteria, library, etc. Classes “spotted” for the day are announced over the public address system prior to dismissal.

The program has students even more motivated to get that always welcome pat on the back.
