Fredonia College Cellists Visit Huntington Students

Huntington High School symphony orchestra members received a real treat on a recent afternoon as the SUNY College at Fredonia cello ensemble visited the School Heritage Museum to perform.

Huntington orchestra director Lisa Leonardi invited the eight cellist strong Fredonia group, which was directed by Natasha Farny. “They were all music majors of varying sorts,” said Joan R. Fretz, Huntington’s director of fine and performing arts. “Their majors were music education, music performance, music therapy and music industry.”

Ms. Farny also brought along a vocal professor, who sang a song with the cellists. “They performed several interesting ensemble pieces, two solos by the cello professor, and one very demanding cello solo (Hindemtih Cello Sonata), which was performed by a Fredonia student,” Mrs. Fretz said.

Earlier in the afternoon, Ms. Farny provided a master class opportunity for four talented Huntington High School lower strong students who regularly perform as a quartet. The group included Andrew Ku, Oliver Lockwood, Matthew Petryk and Michael Marchetta.

“The sophomores performed several pieces for the Fredonia cello professor, who provided critique,” Mrs. Fretz said. “That's what a master class is.”

Huntington orchestra students said they were impressed with the performance by their college counterparts and the professors. “I feel inspired,” Brian Castillo said.

The Fredonia ensemble was on tour, visiting local high school music programs and showcasing the college's music program.
