Catching up with Christine Corcoran
Christine Corcoran gained a reputation at Huntington High School for making level-headed decisions. She was a serious student who also enjoyed having fun. Teachers valued the contributions she made to class discussions and found her to be mature beyond her years. She has made a seamless transition to college life since graduating from high school last June.
“I've been doing great here at the University of Delaware,” Ms. Corcoran said. “I absolutely love it. As of right now I have not declared a major, so I'm taking Spanish, criminal justice, psychology, and calculus. Calculus has been a little difficult, but my other courses have been really interesting and I'm liking them a lot.”
The Huntington grad is taking her time to discover what academic and career area is of particular interest. “I hope to declare a major by the end of this year, probably psychology, criminal justice or something along those lines,” Ms. Corcoran said.
As far as activities outside of the classroom go, well, there’s always time to delve into the club program, especially at a school such as Delaware with its large variety of possibilities. “I'm getting involved in Circle K, which is a college-level Key club,” Ms. Corcoran said. “They do community service projects and fundraisers for various organizations. I loved Key club in high school and am excited to be in Circle K in college.”
At Huntington, Ms. Corcoran was an Advanced Placement Scholar and a member of the National, English and foreign language honor societies. She presented “honored teachers” Erik Bruckbauer and Camille Tedeschi at the 148th annual commencement.
Ms. Corcoran is the latest in what has become a steady stream of Huntington grads heading to Delaware for undergraduate level study. She is embracing college life and already enjoying some unique experiences. “I am going to be a senator for my dorm complex, which means that I will help plan fun events for our buildings to do together,” she said. “For example, we are planning a ‘haunted house; for Halloween.”
It seems quite clear that picking Delaware was a very good decision on the part of Ms. Corcoran, who had a number of college options as a result of her strong high school academic record.
“I love it here, but miss Huntington, too,” she said. “I'm coming home for my fall break this weekend and can't wait to watch the homecoming parade and game, as well as see friends and family.”
