Wayne Edwards Resigns as Director of Math

O. Wayne Edwards, the Huntington School District’s director of mathematics for the past five years, has resigned to accept a similar position in Uniondale. He will be leaving in the next few weeks.

Prior to coming to Huntington, Mr. Edwards served as administrative leader of Mineola Middle School’s math department and taught at Freeport High School and Gladstone Atwell Intermediate School in Brooklyn.

He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in mathematics in 1994 from City College of New York and obtained a Master of Science in math education from Brooklyn College in 1999. He received an administrative certificate in 2002 after studying at Touro College.

Before joining Huntington’s administrative team, Mr. Edwards spent more than 10 years mentoring youth involved in gang activity, providing them with counseling and collaborating with community groups to provide job internships, study programs and other positive alternate activities.

Mr. Edwards has participated in a variety of conferences and seminars to enhance his teaching and administrative skills and to remain informed of advances and trends in math, learning theory, teaching and best instructional practices. Some of these sessions have included a focus on curriculum mapping, strategies for effective teaching and classroom management and developing school portfolios.

A strong proponent of lifelong learning and planning for school improvement, Mr. Edwards’ background includes using his extensive knowledge of the state math standards along with technology and an interdisciplinary approach to create innovative projects that foster independence and cooperative learning through differentiated instruction.

In his free time, Mr. Edwards said he enjoys rooting for New York sports teams, especially the Yankees, Knicks and Giants.
