Jefferson School Parents Meet the Teachers

An overflow crowd of parents descended upon Jefferson Primary School for an early fall “meet the teacher” night. The popular event, which was held all around the Huntington School District, helped parents learn more about this year’s educational program along with teacher philosophies and classroom policies and procedures.

“Our meet the teacher night was a huge success,” Jefferson Principal Margaret H. Evers said. “We believe a strong parent-teacher connection is very important in promoting a child’s academic success and tonight’s event provided an opportunity for new relationships to develop. Hundreds of parents filled our classrooms eager to meet their son or daughter’s teachers and learn how best to support their child’s learning. We are well on our way to a terrific school year!”

Hallways were gleaming and decorated with student work and an assortment of classroom and library resources were displayed from books and maps to computers and other pieces of educational equipment. Parents reviewed it all and asked thousands of questions over 90 minutes.

The evening kicked off with the parents of kindergarten and first grade students meeting with teachers at 7 p.m. for 30-minute presentations. At 7:30 p.m. all Jefferson School parents were invited to the gymnasium for a general meeting with Mrs. Evers, teachers and representatives of the PTA, Special Education PTA and Huntington Foundation. Parents of second and third grade youngsters met with teachers on those grade levels at 8 p.m. for another series of half-hour presentations.

September has been an exceptionally busy month at Jefferson as students and teachers settle into their classrooms and regular routines. Yet, time was found to prepare a special welcome for parents, with creative bulletin boards, artwork, essays and banners on display.

Jefferson teachers pulled out all the stops to create informative presentations meant to “cover all the bases” and give parents a clear picture of their child’s daily school life.

First grade teachers Sharon Weider and Pattye Sweeney had their students create paper reproductions of themselves. When the items were decorated and cut-out, the life-sized “clones” were affixed to chairs, ready to greet visitors to the room. Parents were surprised to find their “child” sitting at their desk waiting for them to arrive. The parents enjoyed walking around and looking for their “child” and many were surprised to find the youngsters waiting at their desks, along with a special “welcome” folder.

In some Jefferson classrooms, desks were arranged with notes and poems for parents. When the hour drew near for the evening to wind down, parents walked away feeling good about their child’s school and had fun walking in their little footsteps.
