Catching up with Kerry Hicks
Last fall Kerry Hicks was busy starring for the Huntington High School field hockey team. This year she’s a few hours south of Long Island, enrolled as a freshman at St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia. It will be especially difficult to picture the Blue Devil girls’ basketball team this winter without the five-time varsity letter winner.
“The first month of school has been really great,” Ms. Hicks said last Sunday. “I am taking a lot of interesting and challenging classes.” Those courses include accounting, Spanish, finite math, economic and crafts of language. It’s a full schedule and it keeps her busy, but there’s always time for some extra-curricular activities.
“I joined the Student Union Board, which is a club that organizes events on and off campus, which I enjoy a lot,” Ms. Hicks said. “We are beginning to plan a ‘Vegas Night’ on campus.”
With the Blue Devils, she was a three-time all-state basketball player and is Huntington’s all-time scoring leader. Ms. Hicks was one of the keys to the program’s renaissance, as the Blue Devils won the 2008 Suffolk title and advanced to the county championship game three straight years.
Not surprisingly, she is also involved in athletics at St. Joe’s. She’s participating in club basketball, “which has been really fun,” Ms. Hicks said. Last Saturday, her team traveled to Rutgers. “We have played in two tournaments already and have gone 5-1,” the Huntington grad said. “At the end of November we will travel down to University of Maryland to play in the Club Championships. It is a competitive club team and we have a lot of fun together.”
Although she is closely identified with basketball, Huntington’s field hockey program misses Ms. Hicks, too. She was All-County as a senior and was known to set the tone for every game. She was also a member of the National Honor Society and the English Honor Society and earned several honors including the Judi Gleicher Mathematics Award, PTSA scholarship, William Class Memorial Scholarship and MVP awards in field hockey and basketball.
“I am majoring in marketing but need to meet my requirements for a general education before I take marketing classes,” Ms. Hicks said. “Saint Joseph's has been really great so far. It is so easy to get involved and meet new people. I am very happy here.”
