Hicks Helps College Win East Coast Club Crown

Kerry Hicks still has that magic touch. The Blue Devil women’s basketball all-time leading scorer helped the St. Joseph’s University club team win the East Coast Division II title.

Playing point guard, Hicks scored 25 points, including 20 in the second-half as St. Joe’s topped North Carolina State University in the finals of the East Coast Club Championships at the University of Maryland at College Park.

Hicks, who graduated from Huntington last June, assumed the starting point guard role after two games this fall and quickly became the player teammates looked to for scoring and on court leadership.

St. Joe’s participated in five tournaments during the recently competed season. At the championships, the team bested Johns Hopkins and Elon before edging North Carolina State by 12 points in the finals.

This marked the championship won by the three year old St. Joe’s club team. “Personally, it was an adjustment playing with different girls considering I was use to playing with the same girls in high school for four years,” Hicks said. “But after only a few practices, I began to connect with my new teammates.”

The St. Joseph’s athletic department will honor the club team’s championship performance during a ceremony at half-time of the SJU-Villanova men’s basketball game on December 9 at The Palestra. The match-up between the arch-rivals will be televised by ESPN 2.

The St. Joe’s club team finished the season with a 13-4 record. Of its four losses, two came in overtime and the other two were by a combined total of five points.

“Being a part of this team has been a great experience,” Hicks said. “It is filled with great girls who like to have fun with each other and have fun playing basketball. I am excited that it is only the beginning for me on this team.”

Hicks earned All-State three times for the Blue Devils and set a new scoring record with 1,408 points. Huntington head coach Brad Reminick built his team around her and the group responded with three consecutive trips to the county finals and the 2008 Suffolk title.
