Huntington School Briefs

 

The J. Taylor Finley Middle School honor society recently held a clothing drive to benefit the Family Service League’s efforts to help those in need throughout the community. An assortment of items were donated and sorted and then packed inside the FSL van by honor society President Alex Castillo and Secretary Katherine Gerdes and distinguished students JT Caputo and Jesse Feldman-Stein. Principal John Amato said he is “very proud” of the group for its efforts.

Student Achievement Awards

Huntington High School seniors Jeffrey Moreira and Joselin Rodriquez were presented with Student Achievement Awards at the 15th annual Hispanic heritage celebration at Huntington Town Hall last month. In all, a dozen students from high schools across the town were honored. Town and district officials were in the audience for the ceremony.

 

 

Toaz Alma Mater

Robert K. Toaz Junior High School served the Huntington School District from September 1939 through June 1982. More than 10,000 students were educated there.

 

The school’s alma mater song was as follows:

Always onward for our school: Toaz Junior High.”

Enrollment Projections

According to an enrollment projections report compiled by Assistant Superintendent Joseph Giani, the Huntington School District expects a total enrollment of 4,579 students for the 2010/11 school year.

 

The projection is for 1,301 students at Huntington High School, 695 at J. Taylor Finley Middle School, 522 at Woodhull Intermediate School, 520 at Jack Abrams Intermediate School, 399 at Flower Hill Primary School, 395 at Washington Primary School, 377 at Southdown Primary School and 370 at Jefferson Primary School.

 

The high school’s Class of 2011 is currently pegged at 271 students, but the sophomore class (Class of 2013) is estimated at 386 students.

College Reps Visit

Huntington High School was recently visited by representatives from the Maryland Institute College of Art, LaSalle College, Five Towns College and Baruch College.

Invitations in the Mail

Invitations to the Huntington Foundation’s Reach for the Stars gala on Friday, January 22, 2010 at the Woodlands in Woodbury have been popping up in mailboxes around the district. An RSVP by January 5 is requested for reserved seating. The event will run from 6:30 to 11:30 p.m. at the former Gold Coast estate and include a lavish cocktail hour, dinner, dancing and music.

 

Tickets are priced at $125. Vegetarian dinners are available for those preferring such dishes. The evening will honor longtime Superintendent John J. Finello, who will be presented with the Spirit Award.

 

The Huntington Foundation is also seeking items of goods and services for its silent and live auctions. For more information contact Karen Dwyer at (631) 421-4037.

 

A commemorative journal is also planned. It will honor the Foundation’s good works over the past 15 years as well as Mr. Finello’s service to the district, which began in 1972 as a classroom teacher. Next School Board Meeting

The next regularly scheduled meeting of the Huntington School Board will be held on Monday, December 7 at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium of Jack Abrams Intermediate School on Lowndes Avenue.
