Superintendent John J. Finello Postpones Retirement

Huntington School Board members voted 5-2 to approve an amended contract for Superintendent John J. Finello which effectively postpones his retirement for a full year and keeps him in the district through June 30, 2011. Trustees Elizabeth Black and John Paci voted no.

“It’s exciting to be able to continue working on behalf of this wonderful community,” Mr. Finello said. “We have so much work to do, but with an exceptional group of faculty and staff members, students and parents, nothing can stop us from accomplishing all of our goals.”

Mr. Finello announced last July that he intended to retire at the conclusion of the current school year. But, with a number of pressing issues facing the district, he and school trustees agreed to extend his employment by another year.

"We are glad that Jay has decided to stay on through the end of the 2010-11 school year,” School Board President Bill Dwyer said. “With several significant initiatives being considered for the district, it is reassuring to know that we'll have an experienced leader to guide us forward."

Mr. Finello earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education at St. John’s University in 1972 and went on to obtain a Master of Arts in education at Adelphi University in 1975.  He received a Professional Diploma in educational administration at Long Island University – C.W. Post in 1985.

He joined Huntington’s faculty in 1972 and was a classroom teacher at Huntington Elementary School through June 1986 when he was named the district’s elementary science and computer coordinator.  In 1988 he assumed new responsibilities as assistant principal of Huntington Elementary and remained in that position until 1991 when he became principal of Washington Elementary School.
