Medals Galore for Blue Devil Crew

Year-in and year-out the Huntington High School crew team churns out medalists in some of the sport’s most prestigious competitions. It’s easy to take this success for granted and be oblivious to all the training, sacrificing and traveling that makes it all possible.

Earlier this month, Blue Devil crew rowed to medals in three events at the Long Island Frostbite Regatta on Centre Island. In the men’s varsity singles event, Ryan Pavelka won the silver medal and Joey West captured the bronze.

Rowing together in the men’s varsity double, Ben Jensen and Liam Dreusike won bronze medals, missing the second-place spot by one second. Participating in her first regatta, senior Chelsea Hines grabbed a bronze medal with Mia Rienzo in the women’s JV double event.

Pavelka’s been on a roll this season. He won a gold medal in the men’s varsity single at the Head of Harlem Regatta, putting himself in the top tier of high school rowers in the metropolitan area.

“We couldn’t be prouder of our crew program and the athletes and coaches who have put us on the map in this challenging sport,” Huntington Superintendent John J. Finello said. “The commitment displayed by these teenagers and their families is inspiring and the success they’ve attained is just awesome.”

Land training for winter crew will begin December 1. Huntington students interested in learning more about this growing year-round sport can find information on the team’s eBoard site, which can be accessed at http://www.huntingtoncrew.eboard.com/.
