External Audit to be Presented at School Board Meeting

Long before financial scandals were exposed in the Roslyn and William Floyd school districts, the Huntington School Board and the district’s business office took pride in their oversight practices, questioning bills from vendors and digging into even the smallest of money matters to guard against waste or abuse.

Those efforts have paid off time-and-time again, allowing the community to have confidence that its tax dollars are being spent appropriately. The State Comptroller’s office extensively audited the district over the past year and issued a positive report on Huntington’s financial operations.

At its next meeting on November 16 at 7:30 p.m. in the Jack Abrams Intermediate School auditorium, the School Board will host a public presentation by Jill Sanders, CPA of Coughlin Foundotos Cullen & Danowski, LLP, an accounting firm that spent several weeks auditing Huntington’s financial books.

Ms. Sanders will detail the findings of the annual independent external audit, including the general financial shape of the district and she will make recommendations for improving internal controls and procedures along with how the district can continue to best protect the investment made by taxpayers, according to Assistant Superintendent David H. Grackin.

Over the past few years the district has complied with a variety of new state and federal laws meant to improve oversight and reporting and toughen policies and practices.

“It’s our desire to continue utilizing the tightest controls possible and using the recommendations of the auditors to improve our operations,” Superintendent John J. Finello said. “We are receptive to new ideas on how best to safeguard our financial resources against any waste or abuse.”

The public will be provided with an opportunity during the November 16 meeting to address the School Board and administrators about any item contained in the audit.
