Finley Teenager One of “The Curvy Girls”

Victoria Mary Smith is a celebrity of sorts. The J. Taylor Middle School eighth grader is one of “The Curvy Girls” who were recently highlighted in the press and on Nickelodeon when actor, singer and television personality Nick Cannon visited Smithtown West High School to present an award to the group’s founder.

Mr. Cannon recognized Leah Stoltz with a TeenNick Halo award for creating “The Curvy Girls” as a 13-year old. It’s a support group for young women with scoliosis. Ms. Stoltz has endured surgery to treat the curving of her spine and has had to wear a full-torso hard plastic brace.

Naturally the condition and its effects can deal a blow to any young teenager’s tender self-image. The support group is a valuable countermeasure. Ms. Stoltz’s fellow “Curvy Girls” were on hand for Mr. Cannon’s visit and Ms. Smith helped them roll out a red carpet for the ceremony. Nickelodeon, which filmed the event and will air it in December, donated $10,000 to “The Curvy Girls” organization.

Ms. Smith heard about the group last July from her chiropractor. It meets one Sunday each month for about two hours. “They talk about their lives and the challenges of having scoliosis,” Finley guidance counselor Cathy Cain said. “They socialize and have fun.”

The Finley teenager has found the support group valuable. By talking with others their age the girls come to feel less self-conscious about having scoliosis.

“She enjoys being part of it and was really excited about the attention shown by Nickelodeon,” Mrs. Cain said.
